'Ballistic' Pasig cop suspended for brandishing gun

MANILA, Philippines - A Pasig City policeman who brandished a high-powered firearm after being cited for a parking violation has been suspended pending an investigation of the incident last week.

Metro Manila police chief Nicanor Bartolome said he has placed Senior Inspector Oscar Magsibang on preventive suspension and ordered him disarmed after he was caught on camera brandishing a firearm at security guards of the Ortigas Center. Magsibang is the Deputy Chief of Investigation of the Pasig City Police Office.

Bartolome said police officers who abuse their authority will face either administrative relief or jail.

CCTV footage earlier showed Magsibang brandishing his firearm while shouting at security guards and even shoving them around after he allegedly committed a parking violation. Magsibang called for backup and became increasingly arrogant after the SWAT team he called arrived.

Interviewed by ABS-CBN News, Magsibang said he was agitated because a group of security guards had surrounded his car and pointed a gun at him. He said the incident was settled amicably.

The same CCTV footage, however, failed to show any security guard pointing a gun at Magsibang. With a report by Henry Omaga Diaz, ABS-CBN News
